About Daniel Marston, PhD, ABPP

Psychotherapy is not simply about changing how you think. It is about understanding how you want to live.

Dr. Daniel Marston is a licensed psychologist with over 30 years of experience in clinical psychology. His approach to psychotherapy is grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy, but goes beyond simply helping people change negative thoughts or manage symptoms. He believes that effective psychotherapy should help people better understand themselves, make meaningful decisions, and develop a personal philosophy that allows them to deal more effectively with life's challenges.

His approach emphasizes that psychological well-being involves more than learning to think rationally. It also involves understanding what matters to us, finding meaning and purpose in our lives, accepting uncertainty, and recognizing the choices and responsibilities that come with being human. He works with people experiencing anxiety, depression, difficult life transitions, and other psychological challenges, helping them not only address their immediate difficulties but also develop a broader understanding of how they want to live their lives.

Dr. Marston is the author of several books on clinical psychology and writes the Comparatively Speaking blog for Psychology Today. His writing has also appeared several times in Psychology Today magazine. He also serves as a professor in a doctoral counseling program, where he teaches the application of psychological research to clinical practice. His clinical work and writing reflect his interest in bringing together scientific research, philosophical questions, and the practical realities of helping people deal with life's difficulties.

Dr. Marston is board certified in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) and is licensed as a psychologist in Pennsylvania and Ohio. He provides psychotherapy through video sessions and is also experienced in forensic psychology, having conducted psychological evaluations and served as an expert witness in multiple court jurisdictions. He is available for psychotherapy, forensic psychological evaluations, professional consultation, and writing and educational projects.

Individual Psychotherapy

My approach to psychotherapy is based on a more comprehensive and in-depth form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that goes well beyond simply thinking positively or learning to talk to yourself differently. I believe effective psychotherapy involves getting to the heart of what is really troubling a person, including concerns that may not be immediately apparent. Rather than focusing only on symptoms or the problems that bring someone into therapy, I work with people to better understand how their thoughts, emotions, experiences, relationships, and beliefs about themselves and the world influence how they live their lives. This includes addressing deeper questions about meaning, purpose, personal responsibility, and how to deal with life's inevitable difficulties. My goal is not simply to help people feel better in the moment, but to help them develop a more thoughtful, realistic, and personally meaningful approach to living their lives.

Forensic Evaluations

My approach to forensic psychological evaluations emphasizes a comprehensive understanding of human behavior and the psychological factors that may be relevant to legal questions. As a psychologist with extensive experience in clinical and forensic psychology, I specialize in understanding psychological disorders and the complex ways that thoughts, emotions, cognitive abilities, and behavioral patterns influence how people act and make decisions. I conduct psychological evaluations for both criminal and civil cases, including competency to stand trial, not guilty by reason of insanity, risk assessments, disability evaluations, and psychological evaluations related to personal injury claims. My approach goes beyond simply identifying psychological diagnoses or describing symptoms. I focus on understanding how psychological disorders and other cognitive and behavioral factors may help explain a person's actions, decision-making, and functioning in relation to the specific legal issues being considered. My goal is to provide thorough, objective, and scientifically informed evaluations that explain complex psychological issues in a clear and understandable manner so that attorneys, judges, and other individuals involved in legal proceedings can make better-informed decisions.

Professional Talks

I am available to provide professional presentations, workshops, and training programs on a wide range of topics related to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), with particular emphasis on the more complex aspects of psychotherapy that are often overlooked in traditional approaches to CBT. My presentations focus on moving beyond the treatment of surface symptoms and helping therapists develop a deeper understanding of the psychological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral factors that influence their clients' lives. I place particular emphasis on helping mental health professionals recognize that CBT is much more than a collection of techniques or structured treatment protocols. It is a comprehensive approach to psychotherapy that can address even the most challenging psychological problems. Topics I frequently address include clinical supervision, treating individuals with psychotic disorders and other serious mental health conditions, understanding and addressing resistance in psychotherapy, and using CBT effectively in long-term treatment. My goal is to help clinicians move beyond overly simplistic approaches to psychotherapy and develop the confidence, flexibility, and clinical skills needed to address the full complexity of human experience within a cognitive behavioral framework.
